Iran's Khouzestan province aims to become a regional sponge iron exporter

Khouzestan province aims to become a regional sponge iron exporter in İran. This project, which has already produced approximately 1.7 million tons of sponge iron during its experimental phase, plays a crucial role in completing the steel supply chain in the province."

Khouzestan's steel industry relies heavily on sponge iron, a crucial material sourced from steel plants located in Esfahan, Yazd, and Khorasan. Notably, the "Zamzam 3" unit boasts an impressive production capacity of two million tons. This robust output renders the need for importing sponge iron obsolete, positioning Khouzestan as a significant regional exporter of this indispensable steel component.

The project directly employs around 200 people, with additional indirect employment opportunities. An investment of over 150 million euros underscores the significance of this venture. Hosseini Mehrab emphasized that domestic production of sponge iron can revolutionize various steel sectors, benefiting downstream products such as steel sheets.

The upcoming projects, including the Atieh Khavarmianeh Steel Rolling Mill and the renowned Zamzam 3 sponge iron project, are set to officially commence operations with government support. Khouzestan’s role in foreign trade and steel exports is expected to witness substantial growth.
