At the 2nd European Green Steel Summit, which SteelRadar was the media sponsor of, Darrel Milton, Senior Sales Director of Eriez USA, introduced a revolutionary method in steel production. In his speech, he discussed the production process of low-copper shredded steels used in steel production and emphasized the importance of this process in the steel industry.
Milton explained in detail how scrap material is involved in the recycling process. He explained that scrap material delivered to the Recycling Shredder Yard for processing, either through peddlers or corporate companies, is inspected and prepared for shredding. He also pointed out that the diversity and variability of scrap material can negatively affect product quality if not processed correctly.
Emphasizing that the amount of copper contained in shredded scrap steel is of critical importance for the steel industry, Milton stated that steel mills in particular strive to meet their copper needs. He also explained how unwanted levels of copper in scrap material can be intervened and reduced to desired levels.
He said that steel mills can achieve significant savings by using more shredded scrap and less virgin scrap, thereby reducing environmental impact. He also highlighted the additional savings that can be achieved by improving efficiency per melt.
Milton said that Eriez USA could use a new method called "Ballistic Separator" to achieve these goals. Using a magnetic separator and a high-speed belt, this method aims to increase productivity by separating the parts of the shredded materials that contain less copper and those that contain more copper.
