According to Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM), the country's total coal production expectation for 2024 is over 710 million tons. While coal production reached 613 million tons as of September, only 97 million tons more is expected to be produced by the end of the year. This shows that total annual production could reach up to 817 million tons.
In the 710 million tons production target for 2024, the supply for the domestic market is expected to be at least 181.3 million tons. This target is critical both to meet domestic consumption needs and to increase competitiveness in the international market.
Increasing global energy demand and Indonesia's status as a major coal exporter are fuelling the country's interest in the coal sector. However, worries about environmental sustainability are also becoming more widespread. Coal production and consumption are expected to remain high in the short term, even as the government continues its efforts to invest in renewable energy sources to reduce fossil fuel dependence.
