In January, Indian imports totaled 4.74 million tons, up 24% y-o-y and 1% m-o-m.
Shipments from Australia accounted for the bulk of India's coking coal imports, reaching 3.19mt, up 5% y-o-y.
Steel production in India decreased 0.2 percent y-o-y to 10.9 million tons in January. Private sector steelmaker JSW increased its crude steel output for January, while fellow Indian producer Tata Steel had expected steel demand and prices to increase in the January-March period due to the government's continued spending on infrastructure.
India's metallurgical coke imports totaled 359,248 tons, more than doubled from the previous year and down 11% m-o-m. India's pulverized coal imports in January decreased 12% y-o-y and 25% m-o-m to 1.09 million tonnes as seasonal winter delays slowed offers from Russia.
