India remains a significant importer of coking coal globally, a crucial component in steel production, with imports ranging from 47 million to 54 million tonnes over the past decade.
Australia retained its position as the largest supplier of coking coal in FY24, accounting for 59 percent of the total shipments, albeit with a declining trend. Russia, with a 12 percent market share, and the USA, with 14 percent, gained ground, significantly altering the market dynamics compared to six years ago.
