India-based steel companies consume approximately 70 million tonnes of coking coal annually. Coking coal imports cover 85% of the country's total needs.
Indian steel companies, which are currently experiencing difficulties due to increasing coking coal prices, have applied to the Indian government for a solution. The Indian government also aims to establish a consortium of state-owned companies to facilitate coking coal imports to help domestic steel producers.
India currently supplies coking coal from countries such as Australia, the USA, Indonesia and Canada, and this time it plans to import from Russia due to affordable prices.
