India implements new quality control regime for steel products

The government has introduced a new quality control regime covering 145 steel products, replacing the previous regime which included 111 products ranging from stainless steel pipes to primary battery parts. Immediate enforcement applies to most specifications, with sub-standard or defective products required to be disposed of as scrap.

The regime encompasses various products such as steel chequered plates and mild steel wire rods, with quality control on certain items like galvanized structural steel taking effect in three months, and on others like hot-dip zinc coating on structural steel bars for concrete reinforcement enforced after six months.

Last October, the government mandated the Steel Ministry's approval for imports not cleared by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), following the issuance of a quality control order by the BIS for several steel products. Importers are now required to obtain prior quality approval from the Centre for imported consignments intended for local sale.
