The country produced 997.826 million tons of coal in the 2023-24 fiscal year, marking its highest output to date. This represents an 11.71% increase compared to the previous year. The Ministry of Coal has set an ambitious production target of 1.5 billion tons by the 2030 fiscal year under the Integrated Coal Logistics Plan.
As of December 15, 2024, coal production for the calendar year increased by 7.66% to 988.32 million tons, while supply rose by 6.47% to 963.11 million tons.
Under the "Mission Coking Coal" initiative, the Indian government aims to produce 140 million tons of domestic coking coal by 2030. The production for FY2023-24 stood at 66.821 million tons, with a target of 77 million tons for FY2024-25. Key plans include the modernization of ageing washeries operated by Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), as well as bringing 14 coking coal blocks to production through auctions open to the private sector.
In the VII NRS e-auction, 17.84 million tons of coal were allocated, while 23.98 million tons were offered in four auction rounds under the SHAKTI B(VIII-A) policy. A new pricing mechanism for coal gasification projects was also introduced.
Under the Coal Bearing Areas Act, land acquisitions in 2024 reached a total of 16,838.34 acres, with more than 257,000 hectares of data added to the PM GatiShakti Portal for infrastructure planning.
