Hydrogen DRI pilot plant launches in Germany

A startup called HyIron has so far built the world's largest hydrogen-based direct reduction plant for the production of green iron in Lingen, Germany.

Hydrogen DRI pilot plant launches in Germany

HyIron is a combination of TS Group from Aachen and LSF Energy from Paderborn. TS Group describes itself as a pioneer in technical solutions in the field of fuel cells, batteries and industrial furnaces, while LSF Energy has many years of experience in renewable energy production.

The partners intend to use sponge iron in steel production from 2024. This will be melted together with steel scrap and then processed into steel. Benteler Steel/Tube wants to use the steel produced in Lingen to make low-CO2 pipes. The first step of the research project is to produce 1 ton of iron per hour using green hydrogen.

HyIron is currently producing iron ore on an industrial scale in Namibia with the support of the German economy ministry. Stephan Köhne, managing partner of HyIron, said in a statement: "In the long term, we will be able to produce up to 2 million tons of iron per year for the German steel industry here. Here in Lingen, we use iron ore from Namibia to optimize the process and the product."
