With the two-strand continuous caster designed with an annual capacity of 2.4 million tons, the number of machines from Primetals Technologies in operation at HBIS Tangsteel’s same site has reached four. The first two casters were installed in 2020, followed by a third in 2023. The company now operates eight slab caster strands, all supplied by Primetals Technologies, reaching a combined annual production capacity of 9.6 million tons of slabs.
Long-standing collaboration strengthens
This latest investment represents a significant milestone in the collaboration between HBIS Group and Primetals Technologies. With this project covering new installations and modernization efforts, the parties have partnered on a total of ten continuous casting projects, including both slab and long casters. In this long-standing partnership, Primetals Technologies’ equipment quality and reliable service were among the decisive factors.
The scope of supply included essential mechanical components, Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, and implementation services.
High quality with advanced technology
The new continuous caster incorporates several technological innovations to ensure high-quality slabs. Thanks to the DynaFlex hydraulic oscillator, mold oscillation parameters are flexibly adjusted, resulting in improved strand-surface quality. At the same time, it is aimed to reduce the risk of caster-mold breakouts and ensure greater reliability at high casting speeds.
The DynaWidth mold-width adjustment system increases production flexibility by enabling fast and adaptable slab-width changes.
Maximized yield with automation
Advanced automation solutions used at the plant support consistent, stable operation and high product quality. The Dynacs 3D secondary cooling model optimizes secondary-cooling setpoints by predicting the full 3D temperature profile along the strand during the casting process.
In addition, the DynaGap SoftReduction 3D system provides fully automated roll-gap control to minimize centerline segregation and improve internal strand quality, while the Yield Expert system maximizes production output by optimizing cut lengths. The Mold Expert system monitors the mold in real time to detect and prevent caster-mold breakouts.
HBIS Group, one of China’s largest steel manufacturers, founded HBIS Tangsteel New District in Laoting in 2017 to relocate production capacity from the city of Tangshan. The newly commissioned continuous casting line forms an important part of the company’s investments in this transformation process.
