HBIS Group, a major steel manufacturer based in Hebei Province, is leading efforts to drive the green transformation of the steel industry through the development of hydrogen energy technologies. The group’s Chairman, Yu Yong, emphasized the potential of hydrogen as a key energy source to reduce carbon dependence in steel production.
In December 2024, HBIS launched the world’s first hydrogen metallurgy continuous casting production line for automotive sheet steel at its Zhangxuan High Technology plant in Hebei. This new line, with an annual capacity of 1.5 million tons, is the first of its kind in the world and marks a significant step toward green transformation in steel production. The line is specifically designed to produce automotive sheet steel, a key material for vehicle manufacturing.
As China moves toward its carbon-neutral goals, HBIS has positioned itself as a key player in reducing the carbon footprint of the steel industry, which accounts for around 15% of China’s total emissions. The company has signed agreements with major automakers, such as BMW and Great Wall Motor, to promote a green supply chain. By 2026, HBIS plans to have a production capacity of 7.41 million tons of low-carbon steel products.
