HABAŞ to acquire steel giant

The Turkish steel sector is experiencing a wave of acquisitions, with the latest announcement being the planned acquisition of İlhanlar Haddecilik by HABAŞ, a company led by Mehmet Rüştü Başaran, who holds a fortune of USD 1.1 billion.

HABAŞ to acquire steel giant

According to Kerim Ülker in his column for Dünya Gazetesi, HABAŞ has submitted an application to acquire the entirety of İlhanlar Haddecilik. This latest move follows a trend of significant acquisitions and negotiations in the Turkish steel industry in recent months. Earlier this month, Tosyalı Group initiated talks with Baştuğ Metalurji, a leading steel manufacturer with a turnover exceeding USD 1 billion.

HABAŞ, a prominent player in the steel sector, is set to make a major acquisition. The company aims to acquire all of İlhanlar Haddecilik, a flagship company of the İlhanlar Group that operates in the textile and steel sectors. İlhanlar Haddecilik is based in the Osmaniye Organized Industrial Zone.

Former top 200 company on the ISO 500 List

Founded in 1983, İlhanlar Haddecilik operates in a facility spanning approximately 50,000 square meters and boasts an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons. The company exports a significant portion of its production to the Middle East, Central America, and Africa. It also holds a prominent position on the İSO 500 list, which features the largest industrial companies in Türkiye, previously ranking among the top 200 companies. Within its sector, İlhanlar was ranked among the top 40 companies.

HABAŞ, known for its position as Türkiye's leading industrial and medical gas producer, as well as its distribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), is poised to acquire İlhanlar. HABAŞ is also a leading player in the LPG sector, operating marine terminals, storage and filling facilities, and an LPG vessel. The company began production at its steel facility in İzmir in 1987 and has a capacity of 4.5 million tons in this sector. The Başaran family, who manages HABAŞ, ventured into the financial sector in 1997 by acquiring Anadolubank and entered the automotive sector three years ago.

Acquisition of Honda's facility

Three years ago, HABAŞ acquired the Çayırova factory of Japanese automotive giant Honda, which had ceased production in Türkiye. The plan was to produce hybrid or heavy commercial vehicles at this facility, as reported by the media. While HABAŞ has acquired machinery from the UK for this purpose, production at this facility has not yet commenced. Currently, only chassis assembly is being undertaken. It has been revealed that HABAŞ is preparing to make a TL 6.2 billion  investment in Dilovası, a different location, according to the Ministry of Industry and Technology, but the details of this investment remain undisclosed.
