In a recent report released by the World Steel Association, data reveals a notable downturn in world crude steel production for January 2024.
According to the report, the collective output from 71 countries reporting to worldsteel amounted to 148.1 million tonnmiddleeastes (Mt) during the first month of the year. This figure marks a 1.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2023, signaling a challenging start to the new year for the global steel industry.
With key sectors such as construction, automotive, and manufacturing heavily reliant on steel, the ripple effects of reduced production could be felt across various industries, potentially hindering broader economic recovery efforts.
While the overall production dipped, Arab countries bucked the trend. Their collective crude steel output surged, contributing to the global steel landscape.
Africa, in particular, demonstrated remrkable growth. It produced 2.0 Mt, marking a substantial 16.3% increase compared to January 2023.
The Middle East region also played a significant role. It produced 4.7 Mt, showing a robust 23.1% increase year-on-year.
In the realm of steel production, Arab nations have emerged as notable contributors, showcasing significant growth trends in January 2024. Leading the charge is Egypt, whose steel output surged to 980 thousand tons, marking a substantial 20.7% increase compared to the same period last year. This remarkable uptick solidifies Egypt's position as a key player in the region's steel landscape.
Not far behind, Saudi Arabia maintained its momentum with a robust production of 902 thousand tons, reflecting an 8.2% increase year-on-year. Saudi Arabia steady growth underscores its commitment to bolstering industrial capabilities and driving economic diversification efforts.
Meanwhile, Algeria secured the third position among Arab countries, churning out 375 thousand tons of steel, representing a modest yet noteworthy 1.1% uptick from January 2023. Despite facing challenges, Algeria's resilient steel sector continues to contribute positively to the region's overall production dynamics.
In a remarkable feat, Morocco’s steel production surged to 120,000 tons in 2024, signaling a 4.3% increase compared to the same period in January 2023. This modest yet noteworthy growth reflects the industry’s resilience and adaptability in the face of global challenges.
Despite the pandemic-induced disruptions, the Moroccan steel sector demonstrated remarkable recovery, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic stability. The continued demand for steel, coupled with price recovery, fueled this positive trajectory. Industry revenue also witnessed an impressive 11% increase, reaching 16.8 billion dirhams (approximately $1.7 billion).
Collectively, Arab nations demonstrated a remarkable performance, with the total production surging by 11.5% to reach 3,281 thousand tons in January 2024. This significant uptrend underscores the region's growing importance as a key player in the global steel market, fueled by strategic investments.
