In September, global steel production decreased by 1.2 million tons (0.8%) from August to 143 million tons. This was the fourth consecutive month of decrease. Total worldwide production decreased to 6 million metric tons in 71 countries, according to a report by the World Steel Association. The data for September 2023 brings the total to 1.39 billion metric tons, a 4.7% decrease in global crude steel production and a 1.9% decrease compared to the January-September 2023 period.
This decrease is said to be in response to the effects of ongoing global inflation on manufacturing and construction. World Steel revised global steel consumption for 2024 to 1.75 billion tons, the third consecutive year of decrease.
The World Steel Association tracks crude steel production based on carbon steel produced in basic-oxygen and electric arc furnaces. This report highlights the impact of China's steel industry on global markets. China accounts for more than half of the world's crude steel production. Weak domestic demand and overcapacity have led China to increase its steel exports, targeting 100 million metric tons in 2023.
