Germany's half-year steel production decreased

German mills' crude steel production in the first six months of this year decreased by 5.3% compared to the first half of 2022 to 18.257 million tonnes.

Germany's half-year steel production decreased

Electric arc furnace production in particular decreased by up to 13% to 5.412 million tonnes. The gap widened towards the end of the reporting period. In June, total crude steel production decreased by 8.4% y-o-y to 2.925 million tonnes, while EAF steel production decreased by as much as 20% to 839,000 tonnes.

The figures show that the overall steel consumption economy is slowing down and production cuts are being implemented towards the summer.

Production at German rebar mills was halved compared to the previous year. In fact, one major mill, Badische Stahlwerke, has idled one of its two production lines so far this year. Production may be higher at EAF plants, which produce speciality grade rod for sophisticated applications. This could be revealed in the next half-year reports of steelmakers such as Swiss Steel with its four plants in Germany.
