According to data released by Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl, production in the January-March period of the year decreased by 12.5% y/y to 8.5 million tons.
In March, production decreased by 11.3% y/y to 3.1 million tons. Thus, crude steel production in Germany fell by double digits for the third consecutive month.
BOF and EAF production also decreased
Steel production by basic oxygen furnaces (BOF) decreased by 14.8% to 2.06 million tons in March, while the amount of steel produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) fell by 3.5% to 1.05 million tons. Pig iron production also decreased by 15% to 1.9 million tons in the same period. Production of hot-rolled steel products decreased by 7.3% to 2.79 million tons in March.
First quarter data alarming
Production data for the first quarter of the year also paint a worrying picture for the industry. BOF production decreased by 15.1% to 5.7 million tons, EAF production by 6.4% to 2.7 million tons and pig iron production by 15.7% to 5.3 million tons. Production of hot rolled products fell by 10.9% to 7.6 million tons.
