Germany and Denmark establish giant partnership for green hydrogen

A major project to transport green hydrogen between Germany and Denmark is underway. German transmission system operator Ontras and H2 Energy Europe have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in cooperation for this project.

Germany and Denmark establish giant partnership for green hydrogen

The partnership aims to transport green hydrogen from H2 Energy's Esbjerg plant in Denmark to Germany and distribute it to German industry. In particular, sectors such as steel producers, chemical plants and energy producers will be among the main consumers of this hydrogen.

The planned 1 gigawatt production facility in Denmark will produce 90,000 tons of green hydrogen per year with energy from offshore wind farms. This hydrogen is transported to industrial centers such as Berlin, Leipzig and Magdeburg via the Ontras Green Octopus Mitteldeutschland pipeline in Germany. This pipeline will be about 300 kilometers long and will be integrated into Germany's hydrogen core network.

Germany relies heavily on imports to meet its hydrogen demand, which is expected to increase until 2030, with 50%-70% of demand planned to be met through imports. In this context, the collaboration between Ontras and H2 Energy Europe is part of Germany's strategy to strengthen its hydrogen infrastructure. In addition, these pipelines will make a significant contribution to a low-carbon energy transition in line with the goal of creating a hydrogen backbone across Europe.

While this project stands out as a major step towards decarbonizing Germany's industry, it is also expected to make a significant contribution to Europe's overall hydrogen infrastructure.
