Germany aims to increase natural gas stocks

German Minister of Economy and Climate Protection Robert Habeck said: "In case of interruptions in gas deliveries from Russia due to the Ukraine crisis, there may be other sources of supply."

Germany aims to increase natural gas stocks

Germany wants to increase its natural gas stocks to keep supply security at high levels.

German Minister of Economy and Climate Protection, Robert Habeck, told Der Spiegel that the winter season shows that Germany is even more vulnerable to speculation, price fluctuations and geopolitical tensions, with the decline in natural gas stocks.

"Therefore, we need to improve our options to prepare for the coming winter, so that the gas storage facilities are fully charged," Habeck said. He said, and stated that the options of the German government are limited by law, emphasizing that he sees filling gas storage facilities as a political duty.

Habeck also noted that other sources of supply may be found in case of interruptions in gas deliveries from Russia due to the Ukraine crisis.

Explaining that they can cooperate with Russia on renewable energy and that there is a great potential in this regard, Habeck emphasized that first of all, Russia should reduce tensions on Ukraine.

The total capacity of gas storage facilities in Germany, which receives 55 percent of its natural gas from Russia, is 24.6 billion cubic meters.

The decline in Germany's gas stocks with the economic recovery and the problems in additional gas delivery from Russia triggered the price hike in natural gas. As a result, electricity prices rose sharply.
