German steelmaker Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) has announced that it has decided to invest EUR 3.5 billion jointly with its subsidiaries Dillinger and Saarstahl to transform the steel industry in the Saarland region of Germany and realise green steel production.
It is understood that the company will build a new electric arc furnace (EAF) production line at the Völklingen plant, as well as an EAF and direct reduction iron (DRI) plant for the production of sponge iron at the Dillinger plant.
By 2027, annual low-carbon steel production at the Saarland plant will reach 3.5 million tonnes and carbon emissions will be reduced by 4.9 million tonnes.
