The SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) programme aims to transition to hydrogen-based processes in steelmaking and requires very high quality iron ore pellets. The MoU confirms that Ferrexpo's DR pellets from Ukraine will be used in this programme and demonstrates Salzgitter's confidence in Ferrexpo's product quality.
The agreement between Ferrexpo and Salzgitter aims to identify optimal iron ore procurement strategies for hydrogen-based steel production, optimising supply chains and inventory management. The SALCOS programme is technically expected to be completed by 2033. This co-operation aims to contribute to a sustainable future by supporting green steel production in Europe.
Gerd Baresh, CTO of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, said: "We are pleased to continue our long-standing cooperation with Ferrexpo and to intensify this cooperation as part of our transformation programme. Ferrexpo is a critical partner in the decarbonisation of our production processes and supply chains. This agreement will help us to develop environmentally friendly steel production and reduce carbon emissions in our supply chains."
