In the USA, Senate Minority Leader Republican Mitch McConnell has proposed a short-term suspension of the debt limit to prevent the country from defaulting until a more permanent solution is found before the end of the year.
McConnell said in a statement that he would allow Democrats to pass the bill through normal procedures to urgently extend the debt limit by a fixed dollar amount until December to cover current spending.
"MORE TRADITIONAL BI-PARTY MEETING IS POSSIBLE IF THE SPENDING MADNESS IS CANCELED"
Pointing out that this would give the Democrats ample time to pass the debt-limit law through compromise, McConnel said more traditional bipartisan talks might be possible if Democrats abandon their efforts to engage in a "reckless tax and spending spree."
