EVRAZ NTMK is building a new plant to process slag contains vanadium

EVRAZ NTMK, one of Russia's leading metallurgical plants, is building a high-tech plant for the processing of vanadium-containing slag.

EVRAZ NTMK is building a new plant to process slag contains vanadium

The investment in this project totalled USD 21.6 million. The purpose of the new plant is to powderise vanadium slag from the steel production process. This slag will be crushed to a fraction of 0-20 mm, cleaned of metal inclusions and sent to EVRAZ Vanadium's Tula plant for further processing and then to EVRAZ Uzlovaya. Slag processing will be faster and of higher quality through the automatic integrated operation of the equipment.

The first batch of vanadium slag with 0-20 mm fraction will be shipped at the end of June. The capacity of the complex is set at 200 thousand tonnes of product per year.

Recent years have seen a significant increase in demand in the vanadium market, with China, the undisputed leader in both consumption and production, as the main driver. While a significant proportion of the metal is still used in the iron and steel industry to add strength and wear resistance to steel, there is a growing trend towards the use of vanadium as microligatures in metal products such as rebar. Also among these is the development of the VRFB (vanadium redox flow batteries) industry, which could boost the growth of the vanadium market in the future.
