Stephane Sejourne stated that his priority is a plan for steel and other metals. He said the plan is aimed at decreasing high energy costs and taking measures against China's excessive production capacity. These steps are intended to protect the sector while reducing the carbon emissions of steel producers in line with the EU's 2050 carbon neutrality target.
He emphasized that the measures introduced in 2018 were designed to prevent a surge in imports into Europe following the US steel tariffs. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of protecting the European steel sector against China's excessive production capacity.
Emphasizing that the transition to green steel production in the sector should continue even after the protection measures expire, Sejourne stated: "We are looking into similar clauses that would have exactly the same impact, that are WTO compatible."
