Dr. Adam stated that this plan, which addresses the major challenges facing the European steel industry, aims to reverse the decline of the sector and ensure a level playing field with global competitors. He also emphasized the need for swift and concrete measures to encourage investment and use of green steel.
Dr. Adam continued: “With today's Steel and Metals Action Plan, the European Commission is sending a clear message: A strong European Union needs a strong European steel industry,” stressing the strategic importance of the sector. Dr. Adam referred to the content of the plan, noting that it addresses a wide range of areas of critical importance for the sector, from preventing unfair trade to closing loopholes in the Border Carbon Regulatory Mechanism. “Now is the time to implement meaningful solutions through ambitious measures,” he added, calling for accelerating developments in the sector.
Dr. Adam also pointed out that energy costs are still a major challenge: “High energy prices are dragging down not only steel and metals production, but entire European industrial value chains. It is crucial that more work is done to reduce energy costs.”
In conclusion, Dr. Adam pointed out the strategic importance of the European steel industry, stating: “We are pleased that the Commission recognizes how critical our industry is to the EU's sovereignty, security and competitiveness. We will continue to work closely with the Commission as we develop the legislation that will shape the future of our industry.”
