The European Union has postponed the measures it will take in response to the US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports until mid-April to allow time for negotiations. EU Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic made a statement in the European Parliament, providing information on trade issues between the EU and the US.
Sefcovic stated that the EU will harmonize the timing of the two sets of measures against the US tariffs on steel and aluminum, and in the process, they will meet with member states to buy time for negotiations with the US.
If an agreement cannot be reached between the parties, the EU will recalibrate its response taking into account the new reciprocal tariffs that the US administration will impose on April 2, Sefcovic stated, explaining that this approach could provide a tough, proportionate, robust and well-adjusted response.
The US imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on March 12.
