In a cordial telephone conversation between EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the two sides agreed on this important step that will open the door to a new era of trade.
This step paves the way for future strategic cooperation in EU-UAE relations and could serve as an important catalyst for strengthening ties between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
President von der Leyen emphasized that the European Union has a long history of establishing trade agreements with high standards and building open, mutually beneficial partnerships. The talks will focus on deepening cooperation in strategic areas such as renewable energy, green hydrogen and critical raw materials, and liberalizing trade in goods, services and investment.
Von der Leyen expressed confidence that both sides have the capacity to move the process forward quickly and decisively, while EU Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič will soon visit the UAE to give impetus to the talks.
The implementation of a modern and ambitious trade agreement will not only consolidate relations between the EU and the UAE, but will also contribute to regional economic development.
