Erdemir launched the pilot Pyrolysis Plant

Continuing innovative projects for the production of fuel from biomass within the scope of the net zero carbon emission target, Erdemir announced that it has commissioned the pilot pyrolysis plant established to produce biochar as an alternative to coal.

With an annual biochar production capacity of 7,000 tons, the facility converts biomass into biochar through the pyrolysis method, a thermal decomposition process carried out at high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment.

Erdemir aims to use the biochar it produces to replace fossil fuels in different production processes. In this direction, biochar will be used instead of coal in coke production, coke powder in the sintering process, injection coal in blast furnaces and anthracite in the steel mill.

According to the results obtained from the pilot plant, the company plans to switch to fuel production from biomass on an industrial scale in the coming years. With this step, Erdemir aims to reduce both emissions and costs by reducing the use of fossil fuels in the production process.

The company aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2030 compared to 2022, 40% by 2040 and reach net zero emissions by 2050.
