EMR's facility in the Port of Tyne processes 300,000 tonnes of scrap metal a year from manufacturers, demolition companies, the public and tradespeople. The processed material is sold to the Mediterranean, North America and the Far East, where it is reused in everyday items such as vehicles, electronics and household appliances. The Port of Tyne's deep water operation allows EMR to handle up to 50,000 tonnes of cargo on a single vessel, while an in-house stevedoring team provides EMR with port services.
EMR has invested more than £1 million ($1.25 million) in its Port of Tyne facility in South Shields, where it employs around 30 transport, operational and commercial staff. The firm plans to further develop the facility to provide greater operational flexibility.
"Our South Shields operation will continue to play an important role in our journey to become a net zero operation [by 2040] and we will play our part in the fight against climate change. Our continued operations at the Port of Tyne will help us provide our customers with globally sustainable materials and help our customers reduce their carbon emissions." said Scott Bamborough, EMR UK Ports Director.
