İsmail Demir, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Karabük Iron and Steel Factories, emphasized that the concept of "local and national" is indispensable for Turkey and stated that they want to give initiative to local companies as much as possible in the works that will be included in their projects. He emphasized the importance of taking risks, showing courage and evaluating opportunities, and stated that they support strategic decisions for Turkey's future.
Underlining that there is no domestic production without taking risks, Demir said: "We need some courage to take these risks, we need to calculate some risks, but if we do not give opportunities, these will not happen. For example, we need single crystal grown material in gas turbines. We started a project on this. We got successful results. This will continue. Tomorrow, when we think that we have made hundreds, thousands of engines, we will have much more use of such materials. "There will be a need. It is necessary to bring to the agenda what these technologies are, at what stage they are, and what we can do here."
While thinking about the factors related to increasing KARDEMİR's production volume to around 3.5 million tons, and emphasizing that value-added production should be put on the agenda, Demir said, "Work continues on issues such as rails, wheels and axles. We will start selling as a wheel set. With that, "We have relevant investments. If necessary, further investments will be made. We will be integrated with the industry in Türkiye. KARDEMİR is very important for Karabük, it is important for Turkey." he said.
"We want to take steps in green steel production"
Demir stated that they know that their responsibility is to turn to environmentally friendly production as much as possible out of respect for people, the environment and the country, and said, "We are very sensitive about this issue, we will be sensitive. We know that investments to be made in this regard are not, will never be and should not be wasteful. Such investments should be made both in the state and internationally." Stating that they are ready for cooperation on green steel, Demir noted that they also want to use technology in this field.
Demir pointed out that KARDEMİR has also made investments in technology and is constantly improving itself and said, "KARDEMİR has integrated the first phase of the ERP system as the first step. Work on the transition to the second phase continues. It is very important to be able to precisely obtain, accumulate and analyze the data of every phase of production." ." said.
Demir pointed out that, as KARDEMİR, they have created a certain power framework not only on their own, but also with their affiliated companies, and gave the following information:
"Especially considering KARDÖKMAK and KARÇEL, the production of high-alloy, high-quality steel and materials that we expect to serve in the defense industry sector is also an issue that attracts us. It is more boutique, that is, when you look at the annual consumption, there is a figure that will not exceed 1000 tons. When you consider the capacity of an integrated facility, it is a very small quantity, but maybe that 1000 tons of annual production will bring the value of all of them. It is also strategic for our country. In that respect, we want to use KARDÖKMAK both in environmental fields and in these technologies. Demir pointed out that 2023 was a year in which some difficulties were experienced, but despite this, it was good for KARDEMİR and continued as follows:
"We made a profit of over 1.2 billion liras in the third quarter. We expect this to increase further at the end of the year. This is a successful result when we consider the sector in general. Certain investments were made this year. Some of the investments are close to being completed, and certain stages of some of them have been passed. 2024 We are also considering making significant investments in our budget. Certain improvements have been made in our rolling mill and are continuing to be made. Certain steps have been taken to coordinate all stages of our production chain in order to use our production facilities at full capacity. Certain analyzes have been made. Emphasizing that they will do the necessary work to make the new year go even better, Demir said, "Investments are the essence of the business. Profitability is, of course, the locomotive of investments. Of course, this is a chain. We intend to carry out the work in the most efficient way without causing waste at every step of this chain.
