Electricity generation from wind and solar is cheaper than production with imported coal

It turned out that the cost of electricity generation from solar and wind power plants to be established in Turkey is more affordable than the production costs of imported coal-fired thermal power plants.

Electricity generation from wind and solar is cheaper than production with imported coal

According to the analysis prepared by the London-based think tank Ember, the costs of solar and wind energy, which became more competitive on a global scale last year, decreased in Turkey as well.

WIND AND SOLAR POWER PLANT INSTALLATION COSTS REDUCE IN TURKEY

Compared to 5 years ago, the cost of installing a wind power plant in Turkey decreased by 32 percent and the cost of installing a solar power plant by 50 percent.

COAL PRICES IN THE WORLD INCREASED

While this trend in wind and solar energy is expected to continue in the coming years, coal prices have increased substantially in the world.

COSTS PER MEGAVATSHOUR

The cost of electricity generation in a wind power plant to be established in Turkey is 40.8 dollars per megawatt hour, and 51.9 dollars per megawatt hour in a solar power plant.

Thus, even without carbon pricing, electricity generation costs per megawatt-hour in new wind and solar power plants have become cheaper than the electricity production costs of existing imported coal plants.

SHARE OF WIND AND SUN IN ELECTRICITY GENERATION 13 PERCENT

With Turkey's acceleration of clean energy transformation in recent years, the share of solar and wind energy in electricity generation has reached 13 percent, however, more large-scale solar power plants are needed to be commissioned in order for Turkey to realize its potential, especially in solar energy.
