The construction of the USD 546 million complex is 85% complete and is expected to be fully operational by March 2025, sources said. The project is backed by USD 385 million financing from China Exim Bank.
The administration, led by Bolivian President Luis Arce, reportedly plans to produce at least 25,000 tonnes of corrugated rebar and wire rod between September and December. Tests will be carried out in six of the complex's seven factories in July and August.
Jorge Alvarado Rivas, president of ESM Mutún, said the plant will have an annual production capacity of 200,000 tonnes and plans to meet a significant portion of steel imports from Peru, Argentina, Brazil and China.
He also announced that 33 Bolivian professionals are currently being trained in China for the operation of the complex.
