El Marakby Steel decided to modernize its minimill facility in partnership with SMS Group to boost capacity and reduce operating costs. Following a comprehensive evaluation conducted by SMS Group in 2023, the annual production capacity was increased by 10%, raising it from 400,000 tons to 460,000 tons. This modernization process is expected to significantly improve El Marakby Steel's production efficiency.
The modernization efforts focused on improving key areas, particularly the electric arc furnace (EAF), casting, and rolling facilities. The integration of a new 55 MVA transformer, two next-generation CONSO systems, and an automatic CONDOOR® slag door in the EAF system enhances energy efficiency, reduces electrode consumption, and increases metal yield. Additionally, these innovations improve safety by minimizing the risk of damage to refractory materials.
The parabolic mold technology in the continuous casting machine optimizes steel flow, improving product quality while reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption. The implementation of the new CONVEX® mold tube technology enables the production of 150 mm square billets. These advancements enhance production efficiency and significantly improve surface quality.
The newly designed CL-type pre-rolling mill increases production flexibility and allows for the processing of two-ton coils. With this modernization, El Marakby Steel will achieve an annual production capacity of 460,000 tons of rebar and wire rod. This strategic investment will enable El Marakby Steel to respond more effectively to future market demands and strengthen the company’s competitive position.
