Egypt raises steel scrap export duty for economic stability

In a recent update, the Egyptian government has unveiled a robust strategy to fortify its economic resilience by announcing an extension of export duties on steel scrap . The noteworthy decision, led by Engineer Ahmed Samir, Minister of Trade and Industry, entails a significant surge in export duties, now set at 6,000 Egyptian pounds per ton. This initiative is designed to bring stability to the export market, drive local steel production, and enhance the overall economic strength of the nation.

The amended second article of Ministerial Resolution No. 605 of 2022 underscores the government's commitment to regulating the export of a specific category of scrap and waste originating from stainless steel alloys (customs item 7204.21). With immediate effect, the heightened export fee replaces the former rate of 3,500 pounds per ton.

Egypt's position in the steel industry is highlighted by its leading role among Arab nations in crude steel production. In 2022, the country secured the twentieth position worldwide, producing an impressive 10.3 million tons. This trend continued into the first ten months of the current year, with Egypt contributing significantly to the regional landscape by producing 8.490 million tons of crude steel.

Minister Ahmed Samir's strategic decision aligns with broader economic goals, emphasizing the preservation of essential resources, the fostering of domestic steel industry growth, and ensuring a reliable supply of raw materials.
