French railway vehicle manufacturer Alstom and Swedish steel producer SSAB announced that they have signed a cooperation agreement for the supply of SSAB Zero steel, which is produced from recycled steel and has near-zero emissions.
As part of the agreement, SSAB stated that it will deliver the first batch of steel this year to be used in Alstom's Traxx Shunter locomotives. Alstom's Supply Director Christophe Gourlay stated that with SSAB Zero replacing traditional steel, the carbon footprint of materials used in new locomotive platforms will be significantly reduced.
SSAB's Southern Europe Sales Director Huy Nguyen expressed pride in collaborating with Alstom to achieve decarbonization goals and emphasized SSAB's efforts to create a fossil-free value chain together with its customers and partners.
This collaboration between Alstom and SSAB is considered an important step towards increasing sustainability in the railway sector.
