Earthquake-resistant profiles are planned to be produced in Turkey

With the project prepared at Karabük University (KBU) Faculty of Engineering, it is aimed to produce earthquake-resistant profiles imported from abroad in Turkey.

Earthquake-resistant profiles are planned to be produced in Turkey

Prof. Dr. Hayrettin Ahlatcı, Prof. Dr. İsmail Esen, Prof. Dr. Bilge Demir, Karabük Iron and Steel Factories (KARDEMİR) R&D manager Dr. Aysun Işıkgül and graduate students started to work to contribute to the production of QST (quenched and self-tempered) profiles used in the country but not produced.

Within the scope of the "TÜBİTAK 1005 National New Ideas and Products Research Support Program", in the project "Design and Manufacturing of Accelerated Cooling and Self-Tempering Unit for H-Type Steel Profiles and Investigation of its Effect on Mechanical Properties", the academics realized an increase in the strength value of the profiles and an improvement in toughness with the "Accelerated Cooling and Self-Tempering" process they applied in the heat treatment stage.

"An increase from 275 to 500 megapascals was achieved"

Prof. Dr. Ahlatcı told journalists that within the scope of the project, they conducted H profile tests in 120 and 140 sizes with both high strength and good toughness.

Stating that the profile showed a 40 percent increase in strength without any loss in toughness as a result of the test, Ahlatcı said, "An increase from 275 to 500 megapascals was obtained. Due to the fact that our country is in the earthquake zone, soft ground mobility causes buildings to collapse. The steel industry and markets in Europe have been working on the use of quenched and tempered profiles and even made changes in earthquake standards in this direction."

Stating that they achieved positive results in the studies they started with the support of TÜBİTAK, Ahlatcı said, "KARDEMİR contributed to the progress and completion of this project. The production of H-type profiles with accelerated cooling is not available in our country. With this work, we will contribute to the establishment or start of their work as a pioneer in some organizations."

Stating that the project is a first in Turkey, Prof. Dr. İsmail Esen also noted that 90 percent of the design and manufacturing is done in the laboratory with its own facilities.

Giving information about the functioning of the developed work, Esen said, "It is equipped with systems that can adjust the amount of air and water separately for each part, and the mixture can be adjusted according to the dimensions of the profile in the original way. It is the first in Turkey. It is a system that can be patented and will be of great benefit if applied in industrial organizations in our country. With the steel that can be obtained with this system, it will be possible to build large systems, large skyscrapers, stadiums or light and durable structures in the world market. It is a project work that we think will also give great momentum in exports."

"This work can be applied to many structural steels produced by KARDEMİR"

Prof. Dr. Bilge Demir emphasized that it is possible to increase the added value of even low-skilled steel with the project.

Pointing out that the work is to make the low-value material more valuable, that is, to increase its added value, Demir said: "Obtaining high value-added products is always the goal of the economy and technology. Steel is the most prominent, most common, most economical and most technological of structural materials. Karabük is very lucky in this regard."

Referring to the project as a much more sensitive and controlled work, Demir continued his words as follows:

"This work can be applied to many structural steels produced by KARDEMİR. In addition, it is very important that it can be shaped and welded in terms of engineering. It is economically and technologically impossible to obtain such a profile with high alloys. One of the most important methods you can do this is rapid cooling, which can be achieved with the project you see here."
