The new SMB mill supplied by SMS fulfils the company's goals of expanding its product range, improving quality and increasing capacity. The company says it plans to become the "best cost producer" for profiles internationally. The new plant has a capacity of 700,000 tonnes/year, with a total investment of €250 million ($264 million).
Much of the San Zeno Naviglio plant will use clean energy. Duferco has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with a wind power producer, which, combined with the installed photovoltaic capacity on site, will enable the mill to run entirely on renewable energy. This will reduce the carbon footprint and save 28,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The plant has been digitalised and will use artificial intelligence to optimise the production process and energy consumption in line with its "zero waste" policy.
"The plant uses the most modern digital technologies and data analytics to save energy and water and guarantee product quality as well as safety. Innovation and sustainability in the steel industry go hand in hand. Even if the human factor, focus, empathy, competence, determination are indispensable components that cannot be replaced by the machine, artificial intelligence has led to an epochal paradigm shift," said Antonio Gozzi, President of Duferco.
