Danieli has achieved a significant success with the successful production of the first slab and coil at Scaw Metals' newly commissioned hot strip mill complex in Johannesburg. This development marks a transformative moment for Scaw Metals and demonstrates the integration of advanced Danieli Green Steel technologies from smelting to finishing.
The new facility features a state-of-the-art vertical-curve, single-strand slab caster, which has commenced operations by producing high-quality slabs. These slabs are subsequently rolled into hot-rolled coils using the advanced hot-strip mill. The coils will cater to the needs of downstream pipe mills owned by the Barnes Group, Scaw Metals' parent company, as well as other industries requiring flat steel products.
This ambitious project represents a strategic move to diversify Scaw Metals' offerings by adding flat steel products to its portfolio while significantly increasing production capacity. By doing so, the Johannesburg plant aims to establish itself as a leading hub for flat steel products in sub-Saharan Africa.
The complex also incorporates an innovative reheating furnace equipped with PHL firing logic, a technology designed to maximize energy efficiency, enhance operational flexibility, and minimize environmental impact through reduced emissions.
This milestone not only strengthens Scaw Metals' market position but also underscores the commitment of both Scaw and Danieli to advancing sustainable steel production and meeting the growing demand for flat steel products in the region.
