The information of several suspicious people, including people with accounts at the Swiss bank Credit Suisse, associated with criminal organizations and human rights violators, was leaked to the press in February 2022 and published by 48 media companies from around the world.
The leak involved more than 18,000 accounts totaling more than $100 billion, including businesspeople subject to sanctions.
The identity of the person or organization responsible for the leak of accounts held from the 1940s to the 2010s was unknown.
According to Swiss media, federal prosecutors have opened a criminal case for violating banking secrets and damaging Credit Suisse following receipt of a formal complaint.
In Switzerland, the crime of "economic intelligence" is considered a "political crime", while the prosecution of political crimes in the country also requires authorization.
