Chiyoda Steel acquires Danieli Q-Heat technology

Japanese long product manufacturer Chiyoda Steel will be the first company in Japan to reheat billets using only induction heating.

Chiyoda Steel acquires Danieli Q-Heat technology

Danieli Automation has received an order for a Q-Heat induction heater to be installed at the Ayase plant in Tokyo, where deformed steel bars for concrete reinforcement are produced by electric steelmaking from scrap.

The new 4-MW Q-Heat induction heater will reheat cold billets to rolling temperature in less than 8 minutes with an efficiency of up to 20 tonnes per hour, in coordination with a 6-MW Q-Heat system installed in front of the rolling mill to perform hot charging. The Q-Heat ordered by the Japanese manufacturer is designed to be expandable up to 9 MW in the future and to meet a productivity of 30 tonnes per hour.

The system will completely replace the existing gas reheat furnace, increasing plant efficiency and flexibility, while eliminating the direct CO2 production from the billet gas reheat process.

Installed by April 2024, this will be the 83rd Danieli Automation Q-Heat system in operation since 2012.

The replacement of traditional gas-based reheating systems with electric ones represents an important step towards Green Steel production and decarbonisation.
