From January to September 2023, total emissions in the Chinese steel industry increased by 6.65 per cent compared with the same period in 2022.
Specifically, sulphur dioxide emissions per tonne of steel decreased by 11.7% y-o-y to 0.21 kg/t, while smoke and dust emissions decreased by 11.6% y-o-y to 0.25 kg/t. Oxide nitrogen emissions also decreased by 12.8 per cent to 0.42 kg/t. Sulfur dioxide and solid particle emissions in particular saw significant reductions of 14.92 per cent and 14.88 per cent, respectively.
Chinese steelmakers produced 66.42 million tonnes of steel slag in the first nine months of 2023, up slightly by 0.06% y-o-y. Blast furnace slag output reached 173.2 million tonnes, up 1.85% y-o-y. The utilisation rates of steelmaking slag and blast furnace slag were 98.44% and 99.5% respectively, showing y-o-y increases of 0.55 and 0.33 percentage points.
