According to data released by China's National Bureau of Statistics, coke, pig iron, crude steel and steel production across the country increased in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. In March, daily production data pointed to a remarkable rise.
In the January-March period, China's coke production increased by 2.4% to 123.27 million tons. In March, production increased by 4.1% y/y to 41.29 million tons. However, average daily coke production in March fell by 4% from January-February to 1.332 million tons.
Pig iron production rose by 0.8% to 216.28 million tons in the first three months. In March, production reached 75.29 million tons, increasing by 3.1% y/y. In this period, average daily production increased by 1.8% to 2.429 million tons.
On the crude steel side, production increased by 0.6% y/y to 259.33 million tons in the January-March period. In March, production increased by 4.6% to 92.84 million tons, while daily average crude steel production rose by 6.3% to 2.995 million tons.
Steel production showed the highest growth rate of the quarter. Production in the first quarter increased by 6.1% to 358.74 million tons, while March production jumped by 8.3% to 134.42 million tons. Average daily production in March increased by 14.2% to 4.336 million tons compared to the January-February average.
