According to the General Administration of Customs (GACC), this increase represents a 59% growth compared to the same month last year. This notable rise in volume was largely due to a 120% increase in imports of cold-rolled coils (CRC) with a width of 600 mm or more. Imports in this category increased by 63,000 tons, reaching a total of 115,800 tons.
The surge in cold-rolled coil imports was primarily driven by shipments from Indonesia. In April, imports of cold-rolled coils from Indonesia rose by 123.4% month-on-month and 36.2% year-on-year, reaching 111,800 tons, the highest level in 17 months.
In the first four months of 2024, from January to April, China's total stainless steel imports increased by 37.6% year-on-year to 802,000 tons. Approximately 700,000 tons of the imported stainless steel came from Indonesia, marking a 60.4% increase year-on-year.
During the same period, China’s stainless steel exports also showed an increase. In April, stainless steel exports rose by 1.6% month-on-month and 4.3% year-on-year, reaching 393,000 tons. The largest contributor to this increase was a monthly rise of 18.2% in stainless steel pipe exports. In the first four months of 2023, China's total stainless steel exports increased by 8.3% year-on-year, reaching approximately 1.45 million tons.
