Driven by increased urbanization and carbon emission reduction targets, China is directing efforts towards greening the construction sector as much as possible. It is planned that all new urban buildings will be constructed in accordance with environmental standards by 2025. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has issued an action plan titled "Energy Saving in Construction and Green Building Development (2021-2025)," which aims to act in accordance with environmental standards.
The use of steel structures in China is reducing the reliance on concrete, which is the main source of pollution and energy consumption in the country. The demand for steel structures is expected to reach 140 million tons by 2025. However, this development may lead to a weakening demand for construction steel.
China's 2021-2025 Green Construction Action Plan encourages the use of low-carbon emission, high-quality construction steel products. However, more time and effort may be required to achieve this goal. Currently, a significant portion of the country's steel production still occurs through blast furnaces.
The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) is conducting social assistance activities to improve and evaluate ultra-low emission steel production processes in the country's steel plants. However, more detailed rules or standards are needed to identify or provide certifications for green steel.
The Chinese government aims to increase the share of electric arc furnaces (EAFs) in steel production to over 20% by 2030. This step aims to make the country's steel production process more sustainable and reduce carbon emissions.
