According to data from the Shanghai Oil and Gas Trade Center, China's total natural gas consumption in 2024 was 428 billion cubic meters, up 8.4% year-on-year. Natural gas production also increased due to economic growth and infrastructure investments. In 2024, the country's natural gas production increased by 6% to 246.4 billion m³, while imports rose by 9.9% to around 182 billion m³. The bulk of imports came from LNG, especially LNG imports from the US, which increased by 53.2%.
In 2025, natural gas consumption is expected to increase by 6.5% to 456 billion m³. Domestic production is projected at around 261.9 billion m³, with 84.9 billion m³ of imports coming from pipeline gas and 100 billion m³ of LNG.
