Following US President Trump's announcement of retaliatory tariffs, China's State Council Tariff Commission announced a 34% tariff on imported US products.
The statement emphasized that the US retaliatory tariffs imposed on April 2 were not in accordance with international trade laws and that the additional tariffs seriously harmed China's legitimate and legal rights, describing the new US tariffs as a “classic example of unilateral bullying”.
The statement by the Tariff Commission of the State Council of China is as follows;
“In accordance with the Customs Law of the People's Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law and other relevant legal regulations and the basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council, from 12:01 a.m. on April 10, 2025, additional customs duties will be imposed on imported products originating in the United States of America. The relevant issues are set out below:
- All imported products originating in the United States will be subject to a customs duty of 34% in addition to the current customs duty rate.
- There will be no change to the current duty-free and duty-exemption policies, and no exemptions will be granted for the additional customs duty to be imposed this time.
- For goods departing from the point of origin before 12:01 a.m. on April 10, 2025 and imported into China between 12:01 a.m. on April 10, 2025 and 24:00 p.m. on May 13, 2025, the additional duty mentioned in this announcement will not be applied/added.”
