Exports decreased by 1.2 percent compared to the previous month, while imports decreased by 0.4 percent. Expectations were for exports to decrease by 0.4 percent and imports to increase by 0.5 percent. The foreign trade balance gave a surplus of 16.6 billion euros.
The trade balance had a surplus of 17.7 billion euros in July 2023 and 2.0 billion euros in August 2022.
In August, goods worth 69.6 billion euros were exported to European Union (EU) member states, while goods worth 60.0 billion euros were imported from these countries.
Compared to July 2023, calendar and seasonally adjusted exports to EU countries decreased by 1.5 percent, while imports increased by 1.9 percent. In August 2023, goods worth €48.8 billion (-2.6%) were exported to euro area countries, while goods worth €40.2 billion (+3.2%) were imported from these countries.
