UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has announced plans to impose a tax on the import of carbon-intensive products starting in 2026, with the goal of protecting local industries from unfair competition in regions with lower carbon costs.
The United Kingdom is set to launch its own Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in 2026, aligning with the introduction of the EU CBAM. This move aims to mitigate the risk of carbon-intensive products, subject to EU duties, being diverted to the UK market.
In April of this year, the government initiated a consultation process to assess various policy measures, including CBAM, with the objective of minimizing the risk of future carbon leakage and ensuring an optimal policy environment for the decarbonization of the UK industry.
