According to data compiled by SteelRadar from Statistics Canada, Canada's iron and steel exports increased by 20.43% in January 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year, increasing from 61,883 tons to 74,528 tons.
Canada recorded a significant increase in iron and steel exports in January 2025. Most of the exports from the country went to the US. However, iron and steel exports to the US decreased by 2.70% in January 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year, from 799,456 tons to 777,888 tons. Exports to India, on the other hand, saw a big increase in the same period. Iron and steel exports increased by 7980.04% from 246 tons in January last year to 19,853 tons in the same month of this year. The biggest product that caused this increase was scrap. Exports to Thailand, the third country in Canada's export ranking, decreased by 14.81% from 20,107 tons to 17,130 tons. The country where exports decreased the most was Türkiye, with a decrease of 89.35%. Exports to Türkiye decreased from 9,407 tons to 1,002 tons.
Flat products accounted for the largest portion of Canada's total steel exports, totaling 381,220 tons. The United States, Canada's largest trading partner, received 366,669 tons of flat products, while flat products sent to other countries were very limited.
Scrap Exports of 292,460 tons
Scrap steel exports are an important part of Canada's total steel exports. In this category, the United States led the way with 236,797 tons of exports, while India ranked second with 19,809 tons. Pakistan and Thailand are among other exporting countries.
Exports of Long Products and Semi-Finished Products
Canadian long product exports were limited to 123,836 tons. Most of these products were shipped to the US, Mexico and China. In terms of semi-finished exports, 39,905 tons were shipped to the United States. Canadian steel exports continue to see strong demand, particularly in the US and other international markets.
