This year's BIR Recycling Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark is in full swing on its second day. In today's part of the conference, the ferrous and shredder sessions are being presented.
The BIR Ferrous Section's session, chaired by Shane Mellor of Mellor Metals Ltd (GBR), examines the key challenges and opportunities shaping the recycled steel industry. Recent disruptions in the Red Sea and Suez Canal have negatively impacted shipments in the recycled steel market. This session analyses the impact on pricing resulting from logistical challenges and re-routing of shipments and explores the implications for exports to key markets in the Middle East and Asia.
The introduction of the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) raises another question mark over recycled steel flows. The Iron Products Division session in Copenhagen will discuss whether CBAM is likely to hamper exports from Europe and affect global supply chains.
Conference speakers: Shane Mellor (Mellor Metals), Atilla Widnell (Navigate Commodities), Rolf Willeke (BIR).
In the BIR Shredder Committee, the session begins with the traditional update of the BIR World Shredder List, which identifies the number of shredders operating in all countries around the world. This is followed by an update on the latest BIR Shredder Safety Survey from Daniel Pietikäinen, Trade and Environmental Policy Officer of the world recycling organisation.
