The Australian Mining Corporation has officially commissioned the South Flank iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The first ore in the mill was mined in May of this year.
The project, worth $3.6 billion and with an annual capacity of 80 million tons, should replace the existing Yandi deposit with similar productivity, where ore reserves will be depleted in 2023-2028.
Therefore, BHP's total iron ore production in Australian assets will not change significantly. But the company says the launch of South Flank will improve the quality of its raw materials. The average iron content for all the company's supplies will increase from 61% to 62%, and the share of lump ore will increase from 25% to 30-33%.
The new mine is located just 9 km from Mining Area C, which has been developed since 2003. In total, this iron ore complex will produce about 145 thousand tons of raw materials per year, making it the largest in the world.
